There were expectations of power, prestige, and dominion. Suffering, rejection, and death were not part of the agenda. But Jesus challenges our understanding of what it means to be the Messiah and, subsequently, what it means to follow the Messiah. Jesus promises that discipleship leads to a good life, not an easy one. Practicing forgiveness, loving our enemies, peace making, and creating justice are not easy endeavors. In fact, they are likely to face resistance and persecution. In her book, Journey Inward, Journey Outward, O’Connor says that the Christian life is rooted in an inward journey of spiritual growth and an outward journey of serving others.
