      <image:title>Sermons - Take Up Your Cross</image:title>
<image:caption>Jesus’ disciples had many expectations for the long-awaited Messiah: some thought he would be a great military leader while others envisioned a powerful prophet. There were expectations of power, prestige, and dominion. Suffering, rejection, and death were not part of the agenda. But Jesus challenges our understanding of what it means to be the Messiah and, subsequently, what it means to follow the Messiah. Jesus promises that discipleship leads to a good life, not an easy one. Practicing forgiveness, loving our enemies, peace making, and creating justice are not easy endeavors. In fact, they are likely to face resistance and persecution. But bringing the Good News of God’s love to the world, and helping to make it a reality, require disciples willing to endure the risks and hardships of living like Jesus.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sermons - Inward/Outward</image:title>
<image:caption>This morning we begin our Lenten sermon series entitled, “Inward/Outward.” Our series draws inspiration from the work of the late Elizabeth O’Connor, a long-time staff member at Church of the Saviour in Washington, DC. In her book, Journey Inward, Journey Outward, O’Connor says that the Christian life is rooted in an inward journey of spiritual growth and an outward journey of serving others. She writes, “We are going to know little about the task of reconciliation in the world unless we are in touch with what goes on in that world within ourselves and know how difficult reconciliation is there.” Before we can join in God’s work of transforming the world, we must first experience God’s work of transforming our lives.</image:caption>
